Illinois Reboot Education/Outcomes Assessment Graduate Assistant

Background The Illinois Reboot Program is a free, live virtual course created and presented by the University of Illinois Research Park and funded by the Economic Development Administration (EDA), with additional support provided by American Family Insurance. The 9-week program provides participants with a foundation in data science literacy, along with coaching and mentoring from local tech professionals. The program aims to help those seeking to pivot their career path and enter the Central Illinois tech economy, which may lead to high-paying, stable careers in data science. The program specifically seeks to encourage a more diverse and inclusive Central IL tech community and to benefit those who have been adversely affected by the economic factors of COVID-19. Cohorts are composed of professionals (as opposed to current University students) looking to upskill or transition to a different career path. Read more here … and here. We’ve hosted three cohorts and served about 90 participants to date. This program has been a great help to Central Illinois underrepresented and underemployed who are seeking introductions to computing programming and data analytics to help them in their careers. We see that some have leveraged the program to help with their career paths while others were more interested in learning for their own personal reasons. Completion rates have been impressive, given that participants were maintaining jobs and family commitments with the grind of evening classes and homework. Our funding sponsors would like to receive a more formalized review and assessment of outcomes for Reboot participants. The EDA financial award ends June 30, 2022. We want to share a report of results with EDA along with our final project report – which is typically submitted 30-90 days after the financial assistance award ends. Cohort Schedule Three cohorts have been completed. We plan to host two more cohorts before EDA CARES funding ends. The last cohort would begin in April and end in June. Summer 2020 Spring 2021 Summer 2021 Early Spring 2022 Late Spring 2022 Project Scope We seek assistance conducting an educational/outcomes assessment of community members that participated in the Reboot Digital Skills Training program (past and future). We have a limited amount of data from earlier surveys and some testimonies from interviews that we can provide as additional background – which can help to inform development of future assessment efforts and activities for this project. We envision that this work will involve the following: Develop an updated survey tool to use for the purpose of collecting and tracking key data points from Reboot participants. In doing so, consider that they will likely submit the survey more than once – which will help us to track, observe, and develop a timeline of their impact. Develop a plan for scheduling and communicating survey data requests. Develop a plan for requesting and scheduling qualitative discussions with cohort participants or graduates. Prepare/send individual emails to each participant (vs impersonal bulk emails). Be mindful of previously provided input/responses; don’t ignore that knowledge. Ask each participant about their experience and outcomes. Seek to have 1:1 personal conversation, to gain qualitative input, with at least 20 participants from various cohorts. Ideally more. Also aim to discover how the Reboot program can continue to help participants in their journey to explore, enter, or advance in the local technology workforce. What additional technology skills do they want to acquire? What barriers are they facing? Would assistance with course or program fees help them to continue pursuing their professional development goals? Remind them that career coaching and mentoring are still available to them post-graduation. Are they aware of and interested in career fairs and networking events for the tech community? Collaborate with UIRP staff to obtain feedback from Reboot training instructors and mentors (i.e., lessons learned, suggestions on how to improve the program, additional training to consider, etc.). Deliverables – within 30-90 days after June 30, 2022 Create a written report about the outcomes from the program based on the responses received from participants, lessons learned, suggestions for improvement or future development of the training program. Present the results to a group that will include UIRP staff and other stakeholders (funding agencies/orgs, training instructors, etc.). Copy of all quantitative and qualitative data, formal notes, or other materials used to collect and compile the deliverables. Available Resources · UIRP Staff (guidance, supervision, consulting) Cheri Soliday, Outreach Coordinator Emily Wickstrom Neal, Assistant Director of Talent Rebecca Motley, EnterpriseWorks Associate Director for Operations Access to previous data and testimony material collected from participants. Contact information for participants (email addresses; phone numbers if provided) Option to work from the EnterpriseWorks incubator at 60 Hazelwood Drive (intern office area or available public spaces). Additional Information Position is for up to a 50% appointment for Spring 2022 and for three summer months (ending mid-August). Includes tuition waiver (EnterpriseWorks will cover tuition remission). Masters or PhD. Computing equipment will not be provided for this position. The GA will need to provide their own equipment. GA will have access to Box.com, Teams, and other collaborate software. Ideally, the GA will also have a faculty advisor to serve as a project resource and mentor. This is a preliminary estimate of the scope and life cycle of this project, which may be adapted as needed as we learn from the collected data. Click Here to Apply!
