BASIC FUNCTION The intern/coop/student would act in a supporting role for research & design of mechanical engineering functions including (not limited to) 2D design, 3D modeling, electro-mechanical systems, hydraulic & pneumatic functions, machining, and robotics theory. Under engineering manager direction, the individual will provide technical support related to the design of mechanical systems. Additionally, the individual will work in multi-disciplined engineering teams including mechanical, industrial, and computer science (software programming) engineering. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Mechanical/Electro-mechanical Ability to design mechanical systems including (but not limited to) bearings, belts, pulleys, couplings, gear boxes, etc. Ability to specify mechanical components for proper sizing, tolerances, and specifications requested and how to integrate the items with electrical controls. Has knowledge of conveyor systems including (but not limited to) power & free, indexing, belt, chain, split belt, roller, etc. Capable of sizing electric motors (including servo) with mechanical actuators, precision belt & ball screw systems, and gear boxes. Capable of sizing precision linear rails, guides, and bearings. Ability to specify which components to purchase based on system requirements. Machining Ability to specify machining tolerances and communicate this information. Ability to select and specify proper tooling. Use layout and measurement tools. Ability to specify material properties and sizes based on project variables. Working knowledge of lathe and milling machines. Pneumatic/Hydraulic Understand hydraulic theory and use this knowledge to design systems. Design simple pneumatic & hydraulic circuits and/or systems. Understanding of pneumatic/hydraulic manufacturers components including fittings, hose, valves, etc and how to properly size them. Understanding of proportional valves, servo/hydraulics, and other components to build closed loop systems. Understanding of multiple hydraulic pumps including (and not limited to) pressure compensating, constant flow, etc. Ability to correctly size actuators based on force required. Design Software Revise drawings. Specify materials and finishes for materials. Prepare layout drawings as required. Evaluate tolerance stackups to ensure proper fit of components and develop a thorough knowledge of geometric tolerance techniques. Design parts requiring the use of accepted formulas and manuals to compute loads, volumes, stresses, etc relying on the project engineer when required. Design projects using Creo modeling software. Design CAD models. Design and draft pneumatic and hydraulic circuits. Prepare material quotes, parts lists, and documentation for completed projects.
