LifeFoundry is a startup in the University of Illinois Research Park that applies engineering tools, like industrial robots, AI, and modern control software to develop a fully-automated robotic platform and re-invent biotech R&D. We are looking for a software engineer to join us in this exciting journey! You will work closely with us on developing the software interface that helps our scientists interact with the robotic system as well as the backend database and control system that runs the platform. This work will enable novel functionalities for our robotic high-throughput biomanufacturing platform for cutting-edge biotech research. The robotic research platform you will help build will increase the throughput in biotech R&D by orders of magnitude, eliminating human error, and sustainably producing chemicals for a variety of applications. RESPONSIBILITIES: Programming different software components interacting and supporting the robotic platform Building database interfaces to store robot configurations, logs, and workflow procedures to facilitate the automated processes Developing the GUI used by the research scientists to control the robotic platform and automated foundry REQUIREMENTS: This position is open to students in CS, CompE, EE, and related majors with senior standing or above. At least one year of related experience or related courses Proficient in Python programming, No-SQL database design, and Docker Preferably skilled in robotics control, image processing, React GUI design, microcontroller, Kubernetes, software engineering practices Excited to join a fast-paced interdisciplinary team working on a variety of challenging projects Self-motivated and able to work under minimal supervision Able to solve problems with methodical and critical thinking Well organized in presenting design reviews for software development We’d love to hear from you! You will work closely with us on developing smart and advanced robotic systems to enable novel functionalities for our robotic high-throughput biomanufacturing platform for cutting-edge biotech research. The robotic research platform you will help build will increase the throughput in biotech R&D by orders of magnitude, eliminating human error, and sustainably producing chemicals for a variety of applications. RESPONSIBILITIES: Design, build, and test hardware and firmware for robotic systems and lab equipment Develop, validate, and deploy a variety of embedded control systems and work with real-time control of various equipment • Create and maintain reusable, general-purpose code such as low-level communication backends and motor control firmware Develop and test circuits, debug hardware related issues, and create hardware-level controls for equipment and robots Assist with integrating and testing robotic systems and equipment MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Student / graduate in CompE, EE, ME, or related major with senior standing or above At least one year of related experience Proficient in C/C++ Hands-on experience working with embedded systems Circuit design and debugging skills Willingness to expand skill set and solve challenging problems PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Project-based development experience ECE391, CS241, or equivalent low-level design experience Experience with control systems and real time systems PCB design experienceWe’d love to hear from you! The electrical engineering team manages many of these complex tickets. As a team we are trying to get better metrics, visualization, and reports on the tickets assigned to our department. The goal of this role would be to establish more actionable views, metrics, and summaries for different groups within electrical hardware. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Co-manage and develop SimBioSys’ presence on Twitter, Linkedin, and other social networking platforms with the SimBioSys social media team Work with our Marketing consultants to research, write, and update Social Media Content Track analytics for usage and effectiveness of the social channels Co-manage website customization, problem resolution, and performance management in collaboration with the web manager Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required Degree or in progress required – Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or other Life Science preferred. The robotic research platform you will help build will increase the throughput in biotech R&D by orders of magnitude, eliminating human error, and sustainably producing chemicals for a variety of applications. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Design, implementation, and testing of robotic systems and smart devices. • Working with electrical and computer engineers to develop mechatronics control system. • Prototyping parts for automating platform by 3D printing or CNC machining.
