About the Illinois Applied Research Institute Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) is an initiative of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ARI researchers partner with faculty, industry, and government agencies to work on open, proprietary, or classified projects. ARI performs translational research with a sharp focus on the development of technologies that are validated before they leave the laboratory. ARI’s vision is to create a new model for a university-based institute, where industry and federal clients connect with researchers in an integrated environment to understand their needs and rapidly solve problems. About the Role ARI is seeking candidates for a part-time scientific communications intern. This position will assist with developing and executing high-impact communications strategies to help ARI reach diverse audiences. The position will work closely with ARI staff to generate high-quality marketing pieces and assist in the preparation of material for inclusion in monthly publications, such as news stories and a monthly newsletter. Successful candidates will be open to learning about writing for scientifically literate and lay audiences. Responsibilities Work under the direction of the Assistant Director for Research to write, edit, and coordinate communications initiatives such as spotlight articles, monthly newsletters, and social media posts, among others Coordinate with the Office Support Specialist to update social media accounts and the ARI website Support ARI researchers in appropriately branding internal and external communications Monitor policies, procedures, and guidelines related to communications and marketing initiatives; maintain University branding standards Ensure consistent messaging in all communications Perform other duties as assigned Minimum Requirements & Qualifications Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work collaboratively toward a common goal Understanding of internet and social media marketing best practices Results-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills Ability to deliver multiple projects on time and meet intervening deadlines Preferred Requirements & Qualifications 2 years of college credits towards a BS/MS degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field Experience coordinating communications initiatives in a public university or large research center Ability to write and edit technical reports Possess a basic understanding of technical and engineering concepts The position will require 5-10 hours of work per week. The hourly rate of pay will be $18/hour. The anticipated start date is as soon as possible; October 15, 2024 at the latest.
