Laboratory and Incubator Facilities Manager – EnterpriseWorks/Research Park

The University of Illinois Research Park provides an on-campus community where corporate innovation centers, startups, and university research centers can co-locate. The highly skilled tech workforce, student employees, and research preeminence generate innovation and new technologies. The Research Park includes 120+ companies, 18 buildings, and 2,200 employees. EnterpriseWorks is the Research Park’s 43,000-square-foot business incubator for early-stage tech firms, which is operated by the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC) to help launch successful startup companies. Startup companies that have incubated at EnterpriseWorks have raised $1.2 billion in venture capital investments and been awarded 25% of all the SBIR/STTR federal small business research grants in the state of Illinois annually. EnterpriseWorks manages entrepreneurship support programs, business assistance, and training to aid startups and technology commercialization. EnterpriseWorks also leads federally funded small business technical assistance programs for small businesses and university incubators in Illinois. The Laboratory & Incubator Facility Manager manages operational functions of the EnterpriseWorks building, laboratory services, and shared facilities, and responds to tenant service needs for startup clients. Responsible for the effective, cost-efficient, and timely management of facilities and service functions. Provides general customer service support to the small business tenants at EnterpriseWorks incubator and other startup operations and facilities developed in the University of Illinois Research Park. Duties & Responsibilities Laboratory Management  The Laboratory & Incubator Facility Manager position will manage the daily operations of the EnterpriseWorks incubator facilities and other small business facilities managed by EnterpriseWorks in the University of Illinois Research Park. Manage the day-to-day operations of incubator facilities including troubleshooting malfunctioning lab equipment and computers reported by users, maintaining equipment, performing preventative maintenance, calibrating equipment as needed, setting up laboratories and offices for startup companies in the incubator, and managing building maintenance and improvements. Safety and Equipment Operations Serves as the primary safety liaison for the incubator companies with the Division of Research Safety (DRS) and helps to achieve compliance with small business tenants. Monitors and maintains user compliance with safety policies in the laboratories for processes, protocols, and research lab audits. Utilize university best practices in DRS waste procedures and protocol. Organizes new tenant quarterly events with companies and employees to share incubator protocols and shared entrepreneurial resources available to meet their needs. Establish and maintain lab standard operating procedures/protocols for all shared equipment and instrumentation. Provide training for tenants on using shared equipment in labs and the maker space and procedures and protocols to follow. Physically demonstrate to users how to run the equipment safely and accordingly General Administration Manages transitions and exits of companies and employees from the facility for close-out, decommissioning labs, preparing suites for new tenants, and maintaining protocols to remove access to companies and employees no longer actively at EnterpriseWorks.  Assists with employee onboarding with iCARD access, establishing NetID, parking passes, and orientation to the incubator facility.  Onboards new tenants at EnterpriseWorks incubator with their facility needs including office furniture, lab setup, access to campus core laboratories, access to campus laboratory supply stores, and signage at leased suites.  Maintaining fixed asset inventory annually, including the accounting of all EnterpriseWorks-owned equipment and entering data in the FABWeb inventory system.  Coordinates with UI Tech Services manager at EnterpriseWorks to establish networking, computing, server, wifi, printing, and other needs for IT at small businesses.  Coordinates with the EnterpriseWorks Building Service Worker on janitorial and maintenance needs for the facility. Assists the Administrative Aide with reception desk requests related to the facility, including interactions with contractors, facility vendors, and package deliveries. The manager is responsible for assisting with receipts of large/heavy laboratory equipment.  Assistants with entrepreneurship event logistics, planning, and set up with the Assistant Director for Events and Programs. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Description PROJECT MODELING ENGINEER – Decatur/Champaign The Project Modeling Engineer is responsible for supporting projects in all stages of Research and Development by generating financial, cost, and process models to provide the information needed by Management, Project Managers, and Researchers to evaluate projects and clarify the highest impact areas for further investigation. The engineer is in charge of understanding and evaluating process alternatives, and modeling processes based on data from literature and patent reviews, bench, pilot, demonstration and commercial scale trials, and vendor information. The engineer provides mass and energy balances, PFDs/P&IDs, capital cost estimates, sensitivity and Monte Carlo analyses, and evaluation of key financial results. The modeling engineer will be expected to work with and mentor undergraduate interns as part of the work process, and he/she is expected to present and summarize information in clear and thorough reports and presentations. This position is expected to work across various groups including vendors, contractors, Centers of Excellence, operations, and within S&T (Science and Technology). Responsibilities:The following represents the majority of the duties performed by the position, but are not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary. Conduct engineering studies and evaluate and recommend technology choices for nutrition, sustainable chemical, biofuel, and feed processes. Compare and contrast technologies in terms of operational performance and economic feasibility. Assess various performance specifications for key unit operations or equipment. Utilize modeling tools (i.e. ASPEN Plus, HYSYS, Excel based models) to evaluate proposed and current processes (plant-wide as well as sub-systems) and prepare mass and energy balances of unit operations or whole plants. Recommend processing parameter alternatives and technologies to maximize economic performance of an identified process. Estimate capital requirements of various technology and process configurations and determine key drivers from conceptual development stage through demonstration. Generate detailed financial models (evaluating EVA, ROIC, NPV, etc.) based on estimated process costs and OPEX, CAPEX, and market variables. Use modeling tools to determine key drivers in overall value of a commercialized process, including Sensitivity Analysis and Monte Carlo/probabilistic modeling. Aid Researchers in understanding key parameters for design of experiments for pilot and bench trials to maximize the ultimate commercial value of a technology or process. Participate in design and operation of bench and pilot systems in laboratory and industrial environments. Interact with plant engineers, vendors, and contractors during all stages of process development. Support Capital Excellence and Process Optimization teams in implementation of proposed changes in the field as well as provide technical support to the existing processes. Write detailed  reports and prepare comprehensive presentations. Work with student and recent graduate interns to complete modeling activities; provide training, guidance and feedback for new interns Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Technology, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is required. A Master’s degree is desired. Experience: One to three years of experience in process operation, engineering design, and/or R&D in the food and/or chemical industry. The ideal individual has experience assessing process operation costs, estimating capital for large projects, building financial models and evaluating project economics – including sensitivity and probabilistic analyses, designing processes, and evaluating new technologies. Experience with process modeling and capital estimation tools – such as Aspen Plus and Aspen Capital Cost Estimator is desired. Experience with a range of unit operations in nutrition, sustainable materials, and biofuels is also desired. Skills Must possess well-developed analytical skills to analyze and interpret scientific data when designing and evaluating chemical processes. Good written and oral communication skills to communicate with managers, engineering, and R&D staff via reports and presentations. Strong organizational skills to manage large amounts of data and multiple projects. • Able to function within matrix project management environment. Strong leadership skills to encourage open collaboration, provide technical expertise, and positively contribute to research teams. Effective communication of engineering data with research, operations, and business staff. Requirements Must be willing to travel. Must be willing to switch to a shift schedule if needed to support trials and experiments. Comfortable managing/participate in various projects concurrently. Candidate will need to work within established company and laboratory safety guidelines. Willingness to spend time in plant areas, tolerate extreme temperatures, walk long distances, stand, climb stairs and ladders and move through close spaces.
