Veriflow, 2017 EnterpriseWorks Graduate, Acquired by VMware

Ajay Singh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of VMware, announced on August 15, 2019, that the company is acquiring Veriflow, a startup that graduated from EnterpriseWorks in Research Park in 2017. “Veriflow is an innovator in network certification, assurance, and troubleshooting…. Once the acquisition is closed, VMware plans to invest in and integrate Veriflow into vRealize Network Insight to increase our overall network monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities and adding new dimensions of network verification and What-If analysis directly to the platform,” Singh said. In 2016, Veriflow was selected as the Barclays “Innovation Challenge Winner,” beating out over 100 competing companies. It was the first networking company to use continuous network verification to eliminate network outages and vulnerabilities. The startup also announced that they had raised over $8 million in Series A funding that same year. In 2017, their success continued as Brighten Godfrey, co-founder and CFO of Veriflow, was awarded the Bay Area CIO of the Year in the Community Champion category by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times. AGCO Acceleration Center Reflects on Its Two Years Within Research Park

AGCO Acceleration Center (AAC) is celebrating its second year within the University of Illinois Research Park. In their August 12, 2019, article, they note they came to the Park for three reasons: Help recruit students that will be our next generation of AGCO leaders Utilize the expertise of the University of Illinois faculty in agricultural and computer science engineering design Share an ecosystem with entrepreneurs who are developing the new technologies to stay on the cutting edge of the ever-changing agriculture industry The company reflects on how successful they have been at achieving these goals and what they have taken away so far from their time in the Research Park and at the University of Illinois. “Since we first opened our doors, we have been able to build and expand the scope of the AAC in ways we never could have imagined,” they said. As the AAC moves forward, they plan to move from startup phase to growth phase in order to better impact the bottom line. They also intend to expand their reach in the agtech ecosystem to continue sharing innovation with the Research Park and beyond.

Workforce Development

Workforce Development Workforce development resources are available to tenants large and small at the University of Illinois Research Park. Research Park and EnterpriseWorks companies have access to our Recruiter-in-Residence, Human Resources Expert-in-Residence, in-house workforce development expertise, and numerous recruiting events and workshops. The Talent Manager at the Research Park supports the growth of the workforce in the Park by connecting corporations and startups with student and full-time professional talent. This role works directly with clients and coordinates recruiting events and programming to facilitate these connections. Bryan Goode is the Talent Manager for the Research Park. Recruiter-in-Residence The Recruiter-in-Residence (RIR) at the University of Illinois Research Park provides one-on-one recruiting assistance to companies scaling their operations through talent acquisition. Consulting is available for Research Park companies including corporations, small businesses, EnterpriseWorks tenants, and affiliate members. Growth-stage startups are prioritized.   Sophie Roney is the Recruiter-in-Residence for the Research Park. She focuses on helping clients with best practices for sourcing, identifying, and successfully hiring full-time technical talent. She is the owner of PickedUS , a recruitment consulting agency specializing in startups, and agriculture-tech. Sophie is a Champaign native as well as a UIUC Gies College of Business alumna with experience in full-cycle recruiting and talent analytics from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. In addition to one-on-one technical recruiting assistance, she hosts annual training events and workshops throughout the year. Kelly’s background is in strategic human resources, talent optimization, leadership development, assessment, performance coaching, training, and change management. Growing up in a small business, she understands the challenges many owners face in finding, keeping and scaling great talent. Her experience spans multiple industries such as utilities, travel and leisure, retail, pharma and engineering in organizations large and small. She has a master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology, and loves helping individuals and organizations reach their potential.  She serves on the growth advisory panel for Innovate Springfield, the University of Illinois Springfield-led social innovation and business incubator program. She also serves on the board of Women Entrepreneurs of Central Illinois and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources. Brunner is a Professor in the School of Information Sciences and in the Department of Accounting in the College of Business at the University of Illinois with interests in big data challenges involving data analysis, visualization, and mining.  Robert has led Big Data Short courses that focused on topics in visualization and the use of Hadoop and HPC resources for data analytics.  As the Data Science Expert-in-Residence, Robert provides guidance to clients by applying advanced computational and statistical techniques to astronomical data to gain insights that are applicable to business. Udatta Palekar Lorem Ipsum Jana Diesner Dr. Jana Diesner is a faculty member in the iSchool and earned her PhD in CS from Carnegie Mellon University. Diesner conducts research at the nexus of network science, natural language processing and machine learning. Her research contributes computational analysis of the interplay and co-evolution of information and the structure and functioning of socio-technical networks.

Interns Recognized at 2019 Summer Picnic and Intern Awards

Interns from around Research Park gathered on Thursday, July 25, 2019, for the Summer Picnic and Intern Awards. The Research Park community celebrated with food, games, and awards for the most outstanding interns of the year. Throughout the academic year and summer, interns gained valuable work experience while working on projects that positively impacted their respective companies. Of the 700+ interns working within the Research Park, less than 30 became finalists for the awards, and only 5 individuals and 1 group were awarded the winning prizes. Most Outstanding Undergraduate Intern Derek Meyer, P&C Actuarial Intern at State Farm Undergraduate in Actuarial Science “Derek is an extremely hardworking individual, both in his work and school life. He maintains many extracurriculars, an excellent GPA, and handles the pressures of our internship with his time management, organization, leadership, and technical skills. He takes every piece of feedback to heart to try to improve upon his own skills, not just for his sake, but to help benefit his team dynamic as well. Interview with Tushar Pandey, SimBioSys Inc., CEO

Tushar Pandey, Chief Executive Officer at SimBioSys Inc., spoke with The News-Gazette on July 21, 2019, about what he does for the company and what the company is accomplishing. The company’s work focuses on cancer, and the SimBioSys team has “created a platform to computationally simulate tumor response to drug regimens to help oncologists in treatment planning phase.” A patient’s tumor can be made virtual, which allows for deeper understanding that impacts drug delivery, chemical interactions, and metabolism. Essentially, a cancer is modeled in order to monitor its behavior. The company has a complete product for early-stage breast cancer, and clinical trials are already underway. SimBioSys is also working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to gain regulatory approval for their device so it can be used in medical settings. The goal of the company is to have a complete suite for all solid tumors within the next few years, and the first cancer targeted will be lung cancer. Initial work was funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute and from angel investors, and SimBioSys aims to secure another round of funding in late 2019 to speed up their work. Interview with Troy Kollman, Brunswick’s i-Jet Lab Director

Troy Kollman, the site director for Brunswick Corporation’s i-Jet Lab within Research Park, spoke with The News-Gazette about the key contributions of interns and the current direction of the company on July 14, 2019. “The Research Park at the UI is fairly unique among large universities. It offers corporations a collaborative environment to exchange operational ideas with other companies that operate in an innovation space,” he explained. The i-Jet Lab has worked with over 50 University of Illinois students from a wide range of backgrounds, including business, design, and mechanical engineering. They play a large role in supporting Brunswick as they seek to focus resources on the recreational boating industry. Kollmann and his colleagues act as mentors for interns as they all work cohesively as a team, overcoming roadblocks and redefining the marine industry. AGCO Contributes to Agriculture Industry through Augmented Reality

The University of Illinois Research Park’s AGCO Acceleration Center shared the benefits of exploring augmented reality (AR) technology and data visualization in their recent article on June 25, 2019. By utilizing the new technologies of knowledge transfer and AR, AGCO is able to provide customized solutions to agricultural companies and their consumers/ clients. Insight and improvement can be given in the three areas of sales, training, and installation and repair. Through AR, customers can better visualize their desired product, employee training is enhanced, and repairs can be made with the help of 3D animated instructions.
