AbbVie On/Offboarding Specialist Intern

Position Description:  Information Research (IR) is a group within AbbVie’s Business Technology Solutions (BTS) organization that is responsible for delivering business technology solutions, data analytic, and scientific informatic support to the full spectrum of R&D at AbbVie. IR regularly brings on external contractors to help it achieve its objectives. To facilitate the onboarding and offboarding process of external staff, IR is seeking one student to fill the role of an Onboarding/Offboarding Specialist. The Onboarding/Offboarding Specialist will work with a Business Relationship Manager in two key areas: To onboard and offboard external personnel assigned to specific projects within AbbVie. Role Summary/Purpose: The Synchrony Emerging Technology Center at UIUC Research Park is looking for interns. The center will focus on advancing our internal capabilities in artificial intelligence, data science, and other emerging technology domains to create long-term value for our customers. Interns will work closely with our Innovation Station and SMEs to deliver projects for our business stakeholders. Projects can range across multiple disciplines such as basic market and technology research, big data analytics, proof-of-concept creation, data visualization, and software development. Position Overview: The Power Systems Engineer Intern – NERC Compliance will work with a diverse group of engineers who are interactive, supportive, and have their own specialized skillsets.  The Intern will research, study, and test North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Independent System Operator (ISO) compliance for current and future projects. You will play a vital role to ensure compliance monitoring and enforcement of reliability standards. Throughout the internship, you will develop necessary skills to build a foundation of understanding that all power system owners, operators, and users must comply by. Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions): Assists with NERC compliance studies for wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. Performs individual tasks to prepare for onsite/remote NERC compliance testing for conventional and renewable generators. Gains understanding of PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSLF, ETAP, and ASPEN software for power system studies. Researches new and emerging technologies such as inverters, wind turbines, BESS, and hydrogen generation. Prepares and updates Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) commissioning plans. Investigates current NERC reliability standards and aids in the preparation of documentation, requirements, agreements, and compliance. Works under the direction of the Engineering Manager to support NERC compliance projects within Texas and throughout the United States. Performs individual tasks according to good engineering practice and EPE procedures. Required Educations and Experience: Completion of or current enrollment in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program with a major in electrical engineering (preferably with an emphasis in Power Systems) from an accredited college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher Completion of or current enrollment in one or more Power Systems classes: Power Systems Modeling Power Systems Power Flows Power Systems Short Circuits Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience, education, or exposure to the power industry/renewable energy. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This position can be either full-time or part-time, depending on the applicant.
