Computer Engineer Intern – Ascent (Summer 2023)

Who We Are Founded in 2020, Ascent is a venture-backed startup building the unifying dashboard for high-intensity, small unit tactics. Our platform informs incident command where their operators are, how they’re doing, & maps the space. This is done through localization of the operator at the scene, reporting biometric data, pre-planning the interior floor design and relaying all this in real time to incident command. During high risk operations, we ensure that incident command has the necessary information to make for more informed decisions & tasks can be accomplished as efficiently and safely as possible. None of this would be possible without our customers. Since our founding, we have conducted over 1,700 customer discovery interviews with fire departments across the United States. We currently have 22 members on our Fire Chief Advisory Board to help guild us in our mission. Overview of the role We are looking for a Front End Engineer Intern to support us in the development of our ShieldPortal and expand our current connectivity options. Ideally, this person has experience in application development and android interface design, as well as familiarity with languages such as java, xml, html, and css. On a day to day basis, you will research new technologies and propose solutions to user needs. You will identify UI problems and bugs and devise elegant solutions. Additionally, you will participate in code reviews and ship code on a daily basis. You will also edit and manage fully functional Android Studio applications that align with business objectives. Basic Qualifications BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent Junior/Senior Undergraduate or Graduate Student Proficient in Java/XML, knowledgeable in Kotlin, knows some python. Proficiency in Android Studio architecture. We are hiring a Full Stack Engineer to work on our Incident Command Software, which will be used to monitor and command operators in austere environments. On a day to day basis, you will participate in all aspects of agile software development including design, implementation and deployment. You will architect and provide guidance on building end-to-end systems optimized for speed and scale. You will work primarily with Android Studio, AWS, C++, and Kotlin. Additionally, you will engage with inspiring designers and our front end engineers as we create reliable APIs. Finally, you will work to debug and optimize the codebase. This position will work to improve process modeling efficiency, accuracy, and capability for application to critical Caterpillar steel components.  Projects will center primarily around heat treat process modeling on steels with some exposure to forming and casting modeling.  The candidate will work with process simulation software and provide code to model and predict steel microstructures, mechanical properties, and residual stresses resulting from various heat treatments at a full component level. In addition to using and improving internal and external heat treatment simulation codes, the successful candidate will write code and advise on methods of rapid characterization and quantification of steel microstructures from microscopic images. The DevOps Program standardizes software delivery through common tools that support regulatory and security policies.
