Our platform informs incident command where their operators are, how they’re doing, & maps the space. This is done through localization of the operator at the scene, reporting biometric data, pre-planning the interior floor design and relaying all this in real time to incident command. During high risk operations, we ensure that incident command has the necessary information to make for more informed decisions & tasks can be accomplished as efficiently and safely as possible. Ascent offers the opportunity to make a difference in the world by developing technology that helps keep our heroes safe with embedded technology that allows location and health transparency. At Ascent, you’ll work with engineers from all different backgrounds to collaborate on our tech. Since our founding, we have conducted over 1,700 customer discovery interviews with fire departments across the United States. We are looking for a Front End Engineer Intern to assist us in the development of our ShieldPortal and expand our current connectivity options. Our platform relies on Android interface design, which means our application development team utilizes Java, Kotlin, and XML on a day to day basis. **This internship will be conducted in Summer 2023 at our Chicago location.** Responsibilities Research new technologies and propose solutions to user needs Identify UI problems and bugs and devise elegant solutions Participate in code reviews and ship code on a daily basis Edit and manage fully functional Android Studio applications that align with business objectives Basic Qualifications Pursuing BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent Proficient in Java/XML Proficiency in Android Studio architecture. We are looking for an Radio Frequency Engineer Intern to assist our Hardware Engineers in identifying wireless communication errors in structures (penetration, dead zones, signal integrity, etc.) that derive from various factors such as antenna design, placement, material, and RF technology type. This individual will integrate and test various RF communication SoMs technologies on a helmet mounted module and will also be responsible for significant hands-on testing and prototyping of various RF modules. **This internship will be conducted in Summer 2023 at our Chicago location.** Responsibilities Implement a holistic design strategy, considering power output, efficiency, component sensitivity, communication robustness, EMI, form factor requirements and thermal performance Integrate various RF frequency SoMs into the Ascent Shield Module and identify tradeoffs between them Design use of simulation tools and test environment scripting using Python and Schematic/PCB layout Identify wireless communication reliabilities and failures Basic Qualifications Currently pursuing BS/MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent Experience with C/C++ programming and a good understanding embedded communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, etc Ability to analyze and integrate embedded RF drivers and libraries Test various RF communication technologies in the field Proven experience developing RF modules for devices such as STM32, AVR, ARM, etc. Desired Qualifications Familiar with the principles of thermodynamics/heat transfer Ability to utilize both software and hardware debugging tools such as oscilloscope About Us Our team is currently 25 members strong.
