The Research Park at the University of Illinois is a leading innovation hub for technology commercialization with a unique environment that cultivates startups and increases capabilities for established companies. Located on campus, Research Park has more than 120 companies and growing, employing over 2,100 people in high-technology careers. The Research Park also has over 50 startup companies that are commercializing technology. EnterpriseWorks, the Park’s 43,000-square-foot business incubator for early-stage tech firms, is operated by the University of Illinois to help launch successful scientific and research-based startup companies. Job Summary Leads day-to-day communications activities that support programs and initiatives in the Research Park and EnterpriseWorks, in close collaboration with the Director of External Engagement. Designs approaches to extend outreach and awareness of Research Park/EnterpriseWorks activities to our technology hub’s varied campus, community, and external public audiences. Ensures consistency of communication across the Research Park/EnterpriseWorks portfolio. Duties & Responsibilities CONTENT CREATION AND DISSEMINATION • Create original content, including writing and editing, for Research Park/EnterpriseWorks websites, social media channels, and other print and electronic communications. • Identify and edit content, manage subscriptions, and track readership of the Research Park newsletters. Create more specific content and build niche newsletter audiences as needed. • Develop multimedia (photographic, audio, video, written) content to profile successes, university engagement, technology scope, and employment. Capture and promote stories of entrepreneurs and corporate innovation centers within the Research Park community • Administer the Research Park website, including overseeing organization, content creation, updates, and evaluating analytics. • Implement a social media plan for the Research Park and EnterpriseWorks. Manage social media platforms (primarily Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram). Evaluate social media metrics and performance, providing regular updates and pivoting strategy as needed. • Produce and edit and continuously update documents and presentations for distribution to external stakeholders and partners. • Develop and implement distribution of printed and digital advertising, banners, signage, and swag. • Manage and catalogue digital assets, primarily photo and video. • Proactively seek examples of Illinois startup excellence and promote via social and digital media. • Share examples of corporate engagement in the Research Park and value proposition from the location at the University of Illinois Research Park. • Develop case studies about corporate innovation centers in the Research Park. • Work with contractors including graphic designers, photographers, writers, printers, and other vendors as needed. • Maintain organized and accurate records. • Recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate communications student interns as needed/appropriate. EVENT PUBLICITY AND SUPPORT • Identify opportunities to support organizational initiatives and develop communications, materials, and programs that promote and publicize these activities/events. • Promote events strategically across UIRP itself, the broader campus community, external audiences, and partners/audiences as needed. • Support events by creating and writing event-related copy (invitations, programs, agendas) • Maintain events calendar MISCELLANEOUS • Perform other duties as needed to enhance and foster the goals and mission of Research Park and EnterpriseWorks. Additional Physical Demands Work is generally performed in a normal office setting. Occasional travel is required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, or a related field. Five years of professional experience. Familiarity with a content management system such as WordPress. Familiarity with campus Webtools, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other commonly used software platforms for communications including Canva, AirTable and social media schedulers. A deep interest in entrepreneurship, startups and technology. Experience in higher education. Demonstrated experience writing and editing content published on a wide variety of platforms. Project management experience. Experience with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, journalism, advertising, external relations or a closely related field. Three (3) years of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and superb customer-service skills. Excellent organizational skills and multi-tasking capabilities to meet stringent deadlines and produce accurate, precise work. Strong writing and editing skills. Ability to build relationships and perform effectively in a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision. Sound judgment and solid decision-making and conflict resolution skills. A team player who exhibits tact, diplomacy and maintains confidentiality. Preferred: Familiarity with a content management system such as WordPress. Familiarity with campus Webtools. Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 – Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/16/2023.
