Who We Are Founded in 2020, Ascent is a venture-backed startup building the unifying dashboard for high-intensity, small unit tactics. Our platform informs incident command where their operators are, how they’re doing, & maps the space. This is done through localization of the operator at the scene, reporting biometric data, pre-planning the interior floor design and relaying all this in real time to incident command. During high risk operations, we ensure that incident command has the necessary information to make for more informed decisions & tasks can be accomplished as efficiently and safely as possible. None of this would be possible without our customers. Since our founding, we have conducted over 1,700 customer discovery interviews with fire departments across the United States. We currently have 22 members on our Fire Chief Advisory Board to help guild us in our mission. We currently have two offices, one in UIUC’s Research Park and the other in Chicago in the heart of Fulton Market. Our Chicago office is located in an old Chicago Fire Dispatch Center, and includes free street parking, access to a gym on site, and a coffee shop. As a new member on the team, your role will be to explain the “How?,” while more experienced team members will explain the “Why?” We value accomplishment over perfection, meaning errors of action are preferred to errors of inaction. As a member of the team, you will be expected to take full ownership of your role. Overview of the Role You will integrate and test various RF communication SoMs technologies on a helmet-mounted module. We are looking for an engineer to identify wireless communication errors in structures (penetration, dead zones, signal integrity) that derive from various factors such as antenna design, placement, material, and RF technology type. You will be responsible for significant hands-on testing & prototyping of various RF modules. RESPONSIBILITIES: Implement a holistic design strategy, considering power output, efficiency, component sensitivity, communication robustness, EMI, form factor requirements, and thermal performance Integrate various RF frequency SoMs into the Ascent Shield Module and identify tradeoffs between them Design use of simulation tools and test environment scripting using Python and Schematic/PCB layout Identify wireless communication reliabilities and failures ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BS in EE/CE or equivalent with at least 2-3 years experience or MS/PhD in a related field Experience with RF SoM integration & testing Understanding of RF chip design Ability to take ownership & initiative on projects as well as collaborate in small teams Proficiency in the use of electrical test equipment and passion for working and testing electrical hardware Ability to translate datasheet documentation into functional software Experience with PCB layout software and implementation Experience with C programming and a good understanding of embedded communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART PREFERABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Strong understanding of EM concepts & design for EMI Understanding of RF penetration & materials Knowledge of wireless communication stacks Strong understanding of antenna design for wireless power Antenna/RF simulation, optimization & testing Familiar with the principles of thermodynamics/heat transfer
