EPE opened its Center for Energy Innovation to engage closely with engineering, design and business students at the University of Illinois. They will work alongside with leaders and professionals at EPE on projects related to designing solutions for renewable energy including solar, wind, and battery storage solutions, integration, interconnection, transmission and distribution planning and operations, regulatory compliance, grid modernization, distributed energy resources (DER) and energy market analysis and feasibility studies, as well as project management. Natrion is pushing the boundaries of materials science to develop new batteries and battery components that eliminate fire risk while diminishing material costs. Natrion’s new Lithium Solid Ionic Conductor (LISIC) combines a proprietary high-performance ceramic made from a clay mineral that is already used in cosmetics and paper with a type of plastic that’s typically found in building fire insulation. The result is a component that can be integrated into existing battery assembly lines in place of liquid electrolytes to eliminate battery fire risk. Natrion is developing its own sodium-ion battery architecture that will pair all of the safety benefits of LISIC with chemistry that replaces lithium with sodium.

The proprietary FDSS process developed by Tiptek co-founders sharpens the probe tip to atomic dimensions in a self-limiting fashion that does not require skilled operator intervention. The resulting probe tips give excellent high resolution over long periods of time, making them the standard for commercial and research customers.

RIPE is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, and the UK Government’s Department for International Development.

CTEE (Controlled Thermal Energy Engineering) is developing novel thermal energy conversion technologies which increase a system’s energy-efficiency by capturing and recycling heat. The technology allows a heat-driven system to autonomously operate in three types of thermodynamic cycles: cooling, heat-pump and heat up-grade modes.
