If candiadate is not pursuing a degree, please see the full time positions on the Rivian careers site.  Note that if the candidate’s university has specific requirements for internship programs, it is the candidate’s responsibility to fulfill those requirements.  The Hardware Design Engineering Intern will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and testing of Rivian’s high-performance electrical microelectronics used for electric vehicles. Interns will work cross-functionally to create innovative hardware solutions that meet performance, safety, and durability standards, driving Rivian’s commitment to engineering excellence and sustainability. Responsibilities Design and develop advanced electronic components with a focus on electrical, thermal, mechanical and reliability performance. Conduct simulations to optimize electronic component design and performance. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define package requirements and ensure alignment with device specifications. Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and standards, to drive innovation within the team. Qualifications Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters, or PhD degree at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (Masters+ preferrred). Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Electrical Engineering. Proficiency in EDA tools (e.g., Cadence Allegro, Virtuoso Layout suite, Mentor Graphics Xpedition, Altium). Understanding of signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), and thermal management techniques in electronics design. Experience with simulation and modeling tools (e.g., ANSYS, HFSS, HSPICE, SiWave) for thermal, electrical, and mechanical analysis. Experience with designing passive devices is highly preferred, and/or high-frequency and high-power component design. Knowledge of emerging technologies such as Chiplets, TSV, RDL, and Silicon Interposer. Must be enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. In this role, interns will work with cross-functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, ADAS perception, embedded software, sensors, and vehicle integration to refine and execute the ADAS system validation plan and test suite on Rivian’s test vehicles. Responsiblities Design and implement tool kits (HW and SW) for ADAS system end-to-end validation and benchmark on test vehicles. Collect performance data from on-board ADAS system using the developed toolkits, perform data characterization and analysis. Generate, and present test reports to cross-functional teams. Troubleshoot issues or performance gaps identified from the validation process. Work with internal and external stakeholders to identify and implement solutions to resolve or mitigate these issues. Document validation process and results in Rivian’s tracking system to maintain good traceability. Data analysis and report generation. Qualifications Must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.   Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science. Knowledge of automotive engineering and ADAS systems. Experience in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or equivalent tools for modeling and analysis. Advanced knowledge in general software engineering (git, Linux, build systems, design patterns, automated testing, debugging). Experience with shell script. Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal). Strong analytical capabilities. Experience with analog and digital circuit design and PCBA. Experience in using test and measurement equipment like oscilloscopes.
