The St. Mary’s Road reconstruction project is now complete, and for the first time pedestrians and bicyclists have the ability to safely access Research Park from the Neil Street corridor.

The new pedestrian crossing on Neil Street is a drastic improvement, making connecting to the Research Park much safer for those traversing on foot.

New bike paths and a “road diet” make the street more passable for bicyclists.

In addition to pavement resurfacing and storm sewer upgrades, the infrastructure includes a new sidewalk and lighting along the north side of St. Mary’s Road.

The construction commenced in mid-March and took five months to complete. St. Mary’s Road opened right on schedule, with the barricades being removed on Friday, Aug. 14.

The project was a cooperative effort between the City of Champaign and the university.
