In the wake of relentless competition in the smartphone industry, Amazon unveils its newest attempt at gaining a share of the market. In an industry with so many current successful players, Amazon has the challenge of bringing something new to the table if it wants even a sliver of the market. Cue Personify CEO, Sanjay Patel, to explain how this new smartphone from the global online shopping giant is putting a new twist in the smartphone world.

He cites the low cost way they have enabled four infared sensors to better identify head and eye position for the user as well as developing a quality 3D display without the need for glasses or other technology as the two primary ways Amazon is adding a unique angle to smartphones. CBS was wise in consulting Patel, who is not only a computer engineering professor at the University of Illinois, but also the CEO of Personify, a tech company that recently graduated from the EnterpriseWorks incubator.

Patel and his Personify team have developed ways to enhance video communication, ranging from technology that puts live video into a PowerPoint presentation to being in the same virtual space as the person on the other side of the computer. Because of Patel’s extensive experience with video and user extraction, he was an imperative asset to add legitimacy to Amazon’s newest product.
