EnterpriseWorks startup FruitVaccine is changing the world of vaccinations with an edible, orally-administered fruit-based vaccine for human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Founded by University of Illinois professors Dr. Indu Rupassara and Dr. Dennis Buetow in 2017, the two have worked to modify tomatoes to develop a sub-unit vaccine. The startup has had a strong first year as a business with successful trials performed on mice, and the founders tell Smile Politely that their long term goal, “is to not only create an edible RSV vaccine, but to develop many different edible vaccines for different viruses.”
