About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

ABout the Role

Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December 2026 through May 2028. Rivian’s Internship Program requires active student enrollment.

In this role, you will help define, implement, and automate functional safety verification and validation (V&V) for EMM safety relevant software requirements (SWSRs) on the R2 platform’s DCDC, OBC, and AC export features. You will support development of a FuSa test plan, author and prioritize test cases, build traceability from safety requirements to tests and evidence, and contribute to automated coverage dashboards and reports that derisk R2 launch and ensure EMM is not a safety limiter as the program scales to volume.

Responsibilities

  • Define, implement, and automate end-to-end functional safety verification and validation (V&V) for software safety requirements (SWSRs) on the current vehicle platform.
  • Development of functional safety test plans, author, and prioritize test cases for all safety-relevant SWSRs in lockstep with software development.
  • Build an end-to-end traceability matrix linking safety requirements to test cases and objective evidence (SWSR → test case → results → SWSR).
  • Contribute to tooling setup and create automated coverage dashboards and nightly results reports to provide actionable visibility for engineering teams.
  • Execute testing, support gap closure, and assist in generating final reporting to provide objective evidence for functional safety sign-off and de-risk the current vehicle program.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters, or PhD degree at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
  • Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
  • Understanding basics of Functional Safety (ISO 26262) and understanding of safety concepts, ASILs, and safety mechanisms
  • Experience with HIL or embedded test execution (running tests on HIL benches or embedded targets)
  • Familiarity with embedded software verification (test cases, fault injection, timing/threshold validation)
  • Basic Python or similar scripting for automation, data processing, and report generation
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with FuSa, Controls, Platform, and test teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with HIL tools (e.g., Typhoon HIL) or power electronics test benches
  • Exposure to requirements and test-management tools (e.g., Jama, Jira, Jama/Flow) and traceability workflows
  • Background in power electronics, DC/DC converters, onboard chargers (OBC), or AC export/inverter systems
  • Prior coursework or project work in automotive functional safety or control systems
  • Experience building dashboards or automated reports for test coverage and results
