About Archean Sciences

Archean Sciences is developing autonomous brain on a chip systems that interface living neurons with advanced hardware and software. Our platform is designed to support scalable in vitro neuroscience, drug development, and biological computing by making live-cell experiments more automated, reproducible, and data-rich.

About the Role

We are looking for a versatile Mechatronics / System Engineer to help build, integrate, and harden the next generation of our autonomous systems. This role will own the end-to-end physical integration of the biological interface hardware into a reliable autonomous platform.

This is a foundational engineering role for someone with high curiosity, strong technical ownership, and excitement about building paradigm-shifting systems. The ideal candidate enjoys building, debugging, and improving complex systems across hardware, software, and robotics, under biological constraints.

What You Will Build

  • An integrated autonomous bioinfrastructure platform capable of reliably running defined experimental routines.
  • Build, calibration, and operating SOPs that allow the system to be reproduced and maintained.
  • Reliability metrics and test infrastructure to track QC metrics, failure modes, and system performance.
  • Practical engineering and industrial design improvements that move the system from working prototype toward scalable product.

Responsibilities

  • Build and integrate electromechanical systems, including robotics, motion control, sensors, actuators, fluid handling, and control software.
  • Reproduce and improve the current system from existing documentation, including design notes, papers, and patent filings.
  • Prototype rapidly across fixtures, wiring, PCB bring-up, mechanical interfaces, and system-level assemblies.
  • Convert experimental and biological requirements into concrete subsystem specifications, test plans, and operating procedures.
  • Design for live-cell constraints, including stable environmental control, sterile fluid handling, optical access, and electrical access.
  • Develop calibration routines, diagnostics, logging infrastructure, and reliability tests.
  • Harden prototypes into repeatable systems that can run defined routines with minimal supervision.
  • Work closely with team members to translate scientific requirements into robust engineering execution.

Requirements

  • Mechatronics, robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related fields.
  • Motion control, sensors, actuators, embedded systems, FPGAs, or automation.
  • Python, control software, data logging, diagnostics, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • PCB bring-up, wiring, fixtures, rapid prototyping, or lab instrumentation.
  • Fluidics, sterile systems, environmental control, microscopy, electrophysiology, or biological instrumentation.
  • Experience building systems that must operate reliably over long periods with limited supervision.
  • A hands-on builder who enjoys making complex systems work in the real world.
  • Highly curious and interested in understanding full systems, not just individual components.
  • Excited by the opportunity to build paradigm-shifting technologies.
  • Comfortable working across mechanical, electrical, software, and experimental domains.
  • Able to prototype quickly and then refine systems to be reliable and repeatable.
  • Detail-oriented with pride in clean builds and well-documented systems.
