Head of Data Science – Boston Bioprocess

Boston Bioprocess Inc.’s mission is to help fermentation product companies develop and scale up production. We are looking for a highly motivated Data Scientist to develop and lead the company’s data platform.

The Head of Data Science will lead, build, and manage the company’s efforts to centralize data from various unit operations and layer lab and pilot process data onto metabolic discovery data to successfully predict large-scale microbial productivity. A successful candidate needs to either have significant experience in AI/ML/Deep learning/Predictive modeling with a strong interest in industrial biotech or significant experience in bioinformatics/process scale up data handling with a demonstrated capability in AI/ML.

This role will provide leadership in using data science to help modernize and optimize the development of fermentation and DSP processes for production of proteins, lipids, amino acids, organic acids, polysaccharides, hydrocolloids, and enzymes using bacterial, yeast, and fungal hosts.

Job responsibilities

• Lead and build the company’s core data platform to digitalize and centralize all process data from various scientific unit operations on both bench and pilot scale
• Develop AI/ML capabilities with existing large public datasets to enable deep learning and predictive modeling across major microorganism groups including bacteria, yeast and fungi
• Use data platform/modeling/data science to help modernize and optimize process development and scale up in fermentation and DSP towards large scale manufacturing
• Serve as the data science lead interfacing with clients and investors when needed

Skills and proficiencies

• BS or MS with 5-10 years of experience in AI/ML/deep learning/predictive modeling with a strong interest in industrial biotech, or 5-10 years of experience in bioinformatics/scale up with demonstrated capabilities in AI/ML
• Very strong communication skills for both internal leadership and direct communication with investors/clients
• Familiarity on how metabolic discovery to process engineering to scale up to manufacture works is highly desired
• Familiarity in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) in traditional approach and modern development in either Ag/Chemical/CPG/Biotech space is a strong plus
