Who are we?

Hourglass Medical is a startup that is revolutionizing human computer interaction (HCI) and developing next-gen technology that reimagines how people access and interact with electronic devices. By utilizing facial and hands-enabling movements, Hourglass is developing powerfully simple hardware control methods for extended reality (XR) and smart glasses in medical and industrial applications.

We’re an energetic team located at the University of Illinois Research Park that was born out of a wellestablished local company. We’re growing quickly and looking to hire a lead engineer to set the pace for our engineering efforts.

Why work for us?

Hourglass Medical will allow you to directly impact people by making the way they interface with technology more efficient and enjoyable and by creating devices that save lives. You will be part of a team of passionate people who innovate with urgency. Your creativity and technical expertise will play a major role in the design direction and outcome of the technology we’re developing.

Our new office at the Research Park provides an inclusive, fun culture that fosters innovation. You get to choose how you work with our hybrid office/remote work plan.

If you’re passionate about technology and improving the way people interact with technology and want to play a part in developing groundbreaking new technology, then give us a look.

What will you work on?

As an integral member of our engineering department, you will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of PCB layouts, specifying electrical components, creating prototypes, and solving technical challenges in collaboration with our cross-functional teams.

  • Design, develop, and optimize PCB layouts using industry-standard design tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or similar software. Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Select and specify electrical components based on project requirements, ensuring compatibility, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Collaborate with suppliers to source components and manage procurement processes.
  • Create and assemble PCB prototypes for testing and evaluation purposes. Work closely with hardware and firmware engineers to integrate PCB designs into larger product systems.
  • Contribute to the development of embedded software for microcontroller-based systems. Write, debug, and optimize firmware code in languages such as C/C++ to implement control algorithms, device drivers, and communication protocols.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues related to PCB design, layout, and component integration. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to meet project milestones and quality standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including schematics, layout files, bill of materials (BOM), and manufacturing specifications. Ensure designs comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, firmware engineers, and product managers, to achieve project objectives and deliver high-quality products on schedule. Communicate effectively to convey technical concepts and project status updates.
  • Ability to take any problem no matter how big or small, dissect it into smaller pieces and never give up!

We’re looking for candidates with…

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or similar tools.
  • Experience with embedded systems programming in languages such as C/C++.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, including analog and digital circuit design, signal integrity, and power distribution.
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, and design for manufacturability (DFM) considerations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for PCB design and manufacturing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
