Boston Bioprocess Helping Nourish Ingredients Make a More Realistic Meat Substitute

Have you ever bitten into a meat substitute product and find yourself longing for the real deal? The aroma, the flavor, the texture, and the taste of… meat? You’re not alone. EnterpriseWork’s very own Boston Bioprocess is teaming up with Nourish Ingredients to create just that– utilizing wild fungi and yeast strains to trick even the biggest meat lovers into thinking they are consuming a meat product. HabiTerre to collaborate on Carbon Breakthrough in Agriculture with Arable and Shell

EnterpriseWorks startup HabiTerre is playing a critical role in an important collaboration between industry leaders Arable and Shell to create a breakthrough in carbon management. The startup helps financial institutes, public agencies, and individual producers to quantify, manage, and reduce financial risks in the farming-related business. By commercializing technology made on campus, the green initiative aims to make an impact on mitigating the effects of climate change by enhancing carbon monitoring in agriculture. Together, the two companies are pooling university resources to develop technologies that will track and measure the carbon footprint of agricultural production, enabling farmers to reduce their emissions while improving their yields. HabiTerre CEO Nick Reinke says that the company “is proud to support this innovative project, which holds the exciting potential to advance sustainability worldwide.”   The company’s unique ecosystem of metering instruments, cloud-based analytics, and crop models are essential in creating a comprehensive understanding of the overall carbon cycle of agricultural production.  Habiterre’s tools allow Arable and Shell to more accurately measure and analyze the effects of changes to carbon models, such as composting, cover crops, irrigation, and fertilization, to determine how to best reduce emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change suggests that up to 10 gigatons of CO2 need to be removed from the atmosphere annually in order to reach global emissions reduction targets, up to half of which could be captured by leveraging agriculture. HabiTerre’s technology plays a key role in this approach, enabling Arable and Shell to pursue their ambitious carbon reduction initiative and foster the unlocking of potential benefits across the global agricultural industry.  Read the full article on the Arable website.

Synchrony: “You Have to Go Where the Talent is”

Synchrony’s efforts targeting University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students to fulfill its needs to recruit tech talent was featured in the Wall Street Journal on May 6 (subscription required). The article cited Synchrony’s partnership with the Datathon at Illinois, a competitive event that exposes students to real-world problem solving in analytics, as one of the creative ways it engages talent. Synchrony has been a lead sponsor for the event and an active host since the event’s inception, engaging with the statistics department and its very active student organization. “You have to go to where the talent is,” said Carol Juel, executive vice president and chief information officer at Synchrony Financial, in the Wall Street Journal’s article, “Companies Get Creative in Hunt for AI Talent”. The partnership came about thanks to Synchrony’s highly engaged Research Park innovation center, where the company  has hired dozens of students. The Synchrony Emerging Technology Center opened at Research Park in 2018. In 2019, it doubled its physical space and intern team, pulling from students from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, math, statistics, business, information sciences, and more. 2020 Research Park Year in Review

In 2020, Research Park accomplished several milestones despite the numerous adaptions. Research Park offered several programming opportunities for small businesses, launched Illinois Reboot, and received a FAST Center grant to aid the impacts of the pandemic. Here is a glimpse of the 2020 Year in Review:  In a virtual environment, Cargill Innovation Lab, Genective, and the Verizon 5G Innovation Hub expanded into the Research Park community. The I-Hotel and Conference Center expansion, the greenhouse for the RIPE project, and the mixed-use building on 1907 S. Fourth St. completed construction during the fall as well.  After the initial lockdown of COVID-19 in March, Research Park offered over 59 hours of programming engaging 243 companies ranging from EnterpriseWorks graduates to current tenants.  In August, Research Park launched the COVID-19 Technology Acceleration Program. This program offered technical assistance, EDA Cares Act funding, and business development assistance. The EDA University Center received over $300,000 from the EDA CARES Act Recovery Assistance program to assist companies impacted by the effects of COVID-19.  Several startups including EarthSense and Serionix transformed their technology to suit the consequences of COVID-19 such as beginning to create high-tech face masks.  Overall, Research Park reached several milestones in 2020 including securing the Illinois FAST Center grant from the U.S. SBA and the addition of two new staff members.
