As part of the talented Boating Intelligence Design Lab (BI-DesignLab) team, a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park, is seeking a Technical Artist. The Technical Artist will be a bridge between engineers and designers/artists, delivering high-quality programming capability in a number of applications as well as understanding designer and artist input and desires.
Responsibilities
The Technical Artist is responsible for building and supporting digital environments, developing extended reality capabilities, assisting with front end app development (web and mobile), and other possible asks. The BI-DesignLab is an innovation space for Brunswick Corporation and full-time employees of the lab should expect a broad range of projects.
The Technical Artist will be the primary owner of several simulators that have been developed at the lab. The Future Helm simulator that has been taken to CES by Brunswick for several years is an example.
As a member of UIUC Research Park, Brunswick Corporation has the benefit of being able to resource interns from the student body to help work on projects on-site. Full time employees of the lab are expected to manage and mentor up to five (5) interns who will help execute the varying projects at the lab. The technical artist will be asked to help determine projects that could be executed by interns, identify skills required to execute those projects, develop job descriptions, attract individuals capable of executing those projects, manage the workflow of hired interns, and identify high performers for potential to bring into Brunswick as full-time employees.
- Develop and maintain digital environments in Unreal Engine.
- Modeling of 3D assets with Rhinoceros 3D and Blender.
- Texture and detail assets to varying levels of quality from simple shapes to photorealistic.
- Develop procedural environment elements.
- Work with other designers and engineers to leverage the developed environment.
- Development tool for UX/UI.
- Validation tool for Autonomy and other efforts.
- Showcase tool for media, investors, and customers.
- Investigate Uses Of Extended Reality (VR, AR, And Other).
- Assist with development of front ends for various projects (mobile, web, and desktop).
- Work with BI-DesignLab team to execute POC style projects envisioning the future of boating. Network cross-divisionally to support the corporate organization.
- Manage Interns
- Plan projects that are executable by interns in semester long efforts.
- Determine requirements for interns and help recruit appropriately.
- Manage the workflow of approximately three to five interns through spring and fall semesters as well as over the summer.
- Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Video Game Development or similar.
- 3-5 years of development experience in Unreal Engine.
- Proficiency with C++, especially as used in video game or simulation development.
- Experience with automated 3D production pipelines and CI as used in film, game, and UI development.
- Proficiency in at least one other programming language commonly used in front end development such as JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python.
- Analytical and mathematical skills, especially in geospatial, topology, and geometry.
- One (1) or more projects developing with virtual, augmented, or other extended reality.
- Experience with Perforce and Git.
- 2-4 years of experience professionally developing virtual, augmented, or other extended reality technologies.
- Some professional experience as a front-end developer.
- Proven track record of learning and applying new technologies.
- Some leadership experience or management experience, professionally or otherwise.
Location:
There will be occasional travel. Once a quarter or less is the expectation.
Position is on-site at BI-DesignLab Office in Champaign, IL.
There is no requirement for lifting heavy things or performing strenuous activity, although occasionally it may be requested.
Occasionally, there will be the need to get on and off boats at various marinas.
The anticipated pay range for this position is $67,300 to $116,600, annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job- related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
At Brunswick, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate’s qualifications and the business context.
