The University of Illinois has announced plans on expanding the convention center at the I Hotel and Conference Center. The decision was made recently by the UI Research Park board. The center can now host large scale events for more than 600 guests that it wasn’t able to prior.

“I think it’s pretty clear that the demand warrants the expansion and has for several years,” developer Peter Fox said.

Nearly 32,500 square feet will be added to the center, doubling the center’s size. The expansion boasts a 14,500 square foot exhibit hall, 223 added parking spaces, and a $13 million dollar budget. Construction is planned to begin in September and continue into building construction starting January. The university owned conference center expects to receive a certificate of occupancy by September, 2020.
