About the Role
Brunswick’s Boating Intelligence Design Lab (BI-DesignLab), a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park, is seeking a software engineer. Projects may span from virtual reality development to building machine learning workflows. The software engineer may be involved in full-stack web development, virtual interactive environment development, machine learning, embedded systems, and more.
The BI-DesignLab is an innovation space and advanced engineering center for Brunswick Corporation and full-time employees of the Lab should expect projects that span a significant range. The nature of an advanced engineering lab requires the ability to work on projects independently, creatively apply knowledge, and be flexible with project requirements. The software engineer is expected to work closely with other members of the Lab to deliver projects as well as diligently represent the work at the Lab to the rest of the organization.
The software engineer will work on some machine learning projects. Brunswick does not do pure research and development of AI/ML technologies but rather focuses on the application of existing and well understood technologies. The software engineer should be knowledgeable about available off-the-shelf solutions and how those may be applied to problems but should also be willing and able to creatively apply knowledge outside of the scope of off-the-shelf solutions.
The Lab has previously developed various types of simulators, mainly using video game development tools. The software engineer will contribute to the creation of these simulators and may be expected oversee the entire development process of one or more projects.
As a member of UIUC Research Park, the Lab has the benefit of being able to resource interns from the student body to help work on projects on-site. Full-time employees of the Lab are expected to manage and mentor up to five (5) interns who will help execute the varying projects at the Lab. The software engineer will be asked to help determine projects that could be executed by interns, identify skills required to execute those projects, develop job descriptions, attract individuals capable of executing those projects, manage the workflow of hired interns, and identify high performers for potential to transition into Brunswick as full-time employees.
