Innovate @ Illinois showcases examples of faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois that are taking research and innovation to the next step – turning them into businesses that can commercialize that technology. The theme of the new episode is entrepreneurship in fields related to sustainability.

The companies featured this month were:

  • Newell Instruments, developers of energy efficient HVAC technology and the Equinox House, a completely solar-powered home in east Urbana.
  • SolarBridge, a solar microinventor technology company started by UI ECE professors, which helps to reduce the cost of installing solar panels. The company has attracted over $27 million in venture capital funding and continues to have an R&D operation in the UI Research Park.
  • An Illinois student venture that has developed a solar-powered rain collection and watering system.
  • PrintEco Inc., a student start-up that developed software to help reduce both printing costs and paper waste.

Innovate @ Illinois is a joint project of the Illini Entrepreneurship Center; the Technology Entrepreneur Center; and the Research Park at the University of Illinois. UI-7 (seen locally on Comcast Channel 7) is the cable television service of the College of Media at Illinois.
