004 Technologies was featured in the e-commerce section of the News-Gazette. 004 is an e-commerce firm based in Germany with its first US location in the University of Illinois Research Park. 004 specializes in everything from developing a website to project management, marketing, customer service and fulfillment. Working in the Research Park allowed the company to take advantage of the rich talent pool offered by the University’s computer science program.

Dr. Sanjay Patel presented his new company Nuvixa, which has developed new technology for presence. You will be able to see this very cool new technology to create a virtual presence, it is a wow when you see it (despite some technical problems with the AV during their presentation). Nuvixa’s platform will enable users to experience exciting new applications where video and audio are integrated into the user interface, where remote video collaborations are fluidly integrated into applications for productivity, education, and entertainment.

Dr. Magnus Andersson and Dr. Gerald Wilson from Autonomic Materials, Inc. (AMI) presented their disruptive technology for self-coatings at the TEDxUIUC event. See an explanation of how their additive to coatings can extend the life of coatings and paint by self-healing. Both scientists were researchers at the Beckman Institute prior to joining AMI in 2007.

Illini Prosthetics is one of the student started companies in EnterpriseWorks, founder Jonathan Naber was the Lemelson Prize winner in 2010. The Illini Prosthetics team is at work finalizing the different concept arms which they will be taking to Guatemala during their field test from July 9th-18th. They will be testing the designs with ten volunteer patients that have been arranged for their company through the Range of Motion Project clinic (www.rompglobal.org).

Chromatin has been nominated for the Biofuels Digest’s Top 30 Most Transformative Technologies of 2010. A total of 149 companies were nominated, and 7 (including Chromatin) in the category of “Genetics and breeding platforms for feedstock transformation”.

Common Ground Publishing was notified in June that the Institute of Education Sciences awarded them two 2010 Fast-Track (Phase I and II) SBIR Awards totaling $1.7 Million in funding. The awards are for: 1) The Learning Element: A lesson planning and curriculum documentation tool for teachers; and 2) u-learn.net: An anywhere/anytime formative assessment and learning feedback environment. The Principal Investigator is UI Education Department Research Professor and company founder: Bill Cope.
