The AbbVie Innovation Center is located in the Research Park at the University of Illinois and provides an opportunity for students and AbbVie’s Research and Development IT group to collaborate on projects to help advance our science. 

Position Description

The Part-Time Student Program at the AbbVie Innovation Center, located in the Research Park, is designed to augment AbbVie’s regular staff, and is for students who are able to work in parallel to their school schedule.

Major duties include:

  • Working on user-centered and small workgroup small application projects that will be utilized throughout the company
  • Developing small programs and components that will be used to solve problems in the R&D area
  • Develop RShiny application running in UNIX environment to query, analyze and visualize genomic data generated internally or collected from public domain, provide user-friendly interface for Abbvie biologists to use these data


  • Must be registered as a full-time student
  • Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis (Q: work location in UIUC office?)
  • Undergraduate and Graduate students
  • Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, or equivalent
  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (only citizen/green card, no international student?)
  • 10 - 15 hours/week during the academic year
  • 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
  • Creative problem solver with ability to understand larger picture but who will focus on details
  • Passion for design and great user experiences
  • Familiarity with user research and usability testing methodologies to prioritize user needs to drive design priorities
  • Ability to design and deliver clean and usable user interface prototypes for desktop

Preferred Skills: 

  • Familiarity with database system and operations
  • Familiar with R and Rshiny programming, experience in using UNIX system and cloud computing environment
  • Familiar with program languages for web-based user interface
  • Knowledge of genomic data is preferred.

Note: The position will be hired through a third-party hiring agency and will begin as soon as possible over the fall semester 2019 with an option to continue through the spring, summer and 2020-2021 academic year.
