Your Responsibilities

As a John Deere Part Time Student - Robotics you will primarily focus on developing autonomous robotic systems for one of Deere's products.

  • You could help with developing software engineering techniques to connect software and hardware to help form a robotic architecture (Software focused).
  • You could help with developing testing and validation techniques for the evaluation for different hardware and sensing technologies in conjunction with utilizing Creo Parametric CAD modeling (Mechanical focused).
  • You will work in a fun, friendly, and fast paced environment consisting of team members with various backgrounds and engineering disciplines to analyze and find conclusions around robotic sensing technologies.
  • Projects are operated in the Agile environment and one will need to be able to handle multiple projects at any given time.
  • You will also be required to present your findings in onsite or offsite meetings and translate your findings/data into understandable documents.

What It Takes

  • Proven working experience with the field of robotics or equivalent school experience
  • Technical ability to develop software code in Python, Java and C++
  • Technical ability to manage software configurations in GitHub
  • Technical ability to design and implement distributed software systems
  • Technical ability to design testing equipment and mechanically focused components
  • Strong analytical and math skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Adept at queries, report writing and presenting finding
  • Pursuing a degree or equivalent work experience in one the following: Degree in Software or Computer Science & Engineering. Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or System Engineering or experience with Autonomous Robotics systems/discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Must be registered as a full-time student at University of Illinois - Champaign
  • Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
  •  Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above 
  • 16 - 20 hours/week during the academic year
  • 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester

A strong candidate will also have

  • Other areas of experience or interest that will help us place you on the right team include:
    • Experience using Robotic Operations System (ROS), specifically "Kinetic or Indigo."
    • Experience with Global and Local localization techniques that utilize vision, perception, mapping, GPS, etc. techniques.
    • Proficient experience in software engineering and development.
    • Proficient experience in algorithm development.
    • Proficient experience utilizing various sensor hardware and software.
    • Proficient in Creo Parametric CAD modeling.
    • Proficient in Matlab, Gazeebo, Simulink and utilizing Raspberry Pi's.
    • Agile Experience.
