LifeFoundry is a startup in the University of Illinois Research Park that applies engineering tools, like industrial robots, AI, and modern control software, to develop a fully-automated robotic platform and re-invent biotech R&D.

We are looking for a Hardware Engineer to join us on this exciting journey! We are flexible on the working arrangement and other than full-time position, internship and co-op positions are available. You will work closely with us on developing smart devices and advanced systems to enable novel functionalities for our robotic high-throughput biomanufacturing platform for cutting-edge biotech research.

The smart devices and robotic research platform you will help build has the potential of increasing the throughput in biotech R&D by orders of magnitude, eliminating human error, and sustainably producing chemicals for a variety of applications.


  • Design, implementation, and testing of smart devices including circuit design, microcontroller programming, with mechanical design consideration.
  • Prototyping devices for the automation platform by 3D printing, PCB design, circuit testing and design and firmware development.


  • This position is open to students or graduates of electrical, mechanical, industrial, general engineering and related majors with junior standing or above.
  • At least one year of related experience
  • Proficient in CAD design, circuits, microcontroller, motor control, 3D printing, PCB design, SMT soldering, and firmware design and testing
  • Excited to join a fast-paced interdisciplinary team working on a variety of challenging projects
  • Self-motivated and able to work under minimal supervision
  • Able to solve problems with methodical and critical thinking
