The AbbVie Innovation Center is located in the Research Park at the University of Illinois and provides an opportunity for students and AbbVie’s Research and Development IT group to collaborate on projects to help advance our science.

Position Description:
The Part-Time Student Program at the AbbVie Innovation Center, located in the Research Park, is designed to augment AbbVie’s regular staff, and is for students who are able to work in parallel to their school schedule.

Information from protein-protein interaction networks (or pathway) plays a central role in today’s drug discovery efforts and integration of this information from multiple sources into a combined model (or network) will allow to get a more complete understanding of the possible interaction partners of a protein of interest (i.e. a potential drug target).
In close cooperation with an international team (Germany & Lake County / Illinois), you’ll be:
• Working on creating an internal database by normalizing and integrating systematically the content of most important available PPI Databases
• Implement metrics for comparing different pathways based on their characteristics / content, such as overlap, granularity, etc.
• Must be registered as a full-time student
• Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
• Undergraduate and Graduate students
• Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, or equivalent
• Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship
• 10 - 15 hours/week during the academic year
• 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
• Creative problem solver with ability to understand larger picture but who will focus on details
• Ability to systematically design a clearly structured data model, deliver clean modular programming code and document developed workflows
• Familiarity with data analysis and excellent personal analytical skills
• Willing to work in global project team (regular Video Conferencing in early US morning)
• Preferred Skills:
• Bioinformatics background or profound computer/data science background with basic biology background, especially gene/proteins
• Ideally experience in the domain of bioinformatics databases
• Comfortable in writing code in Python or R
• Familiarity with processing medium/large datasets/databases (not Big Data)
• Experience with biology/protein relevant terminologies (Entrez Gene Ids, HGNC etc.)

Note: The position will be hired through a third-party hiring agency and will begin as soon as possible over the fall semester 2018 with an option to continue through the 2018-2019 academic year.
